Welsh writer Ken Follett is coming to Vitoria-Gasteiz to
present the Spanish-language edition of World Without End, a sequel to
his successful The Pillars of the Earth. After five years of intense
cooperation with the Santa María Cathedral Foundation, which
provided him with many documents for the project, Follett has chosen
Vitoria-Gasteiz to celebrate the coming out of his latest book. World
Without End is bound to sell millions of copies around the world; in
fact, it has already climbed to the top in best-seller lists in those
countries where it has been released.
Through the book’s success –and thanks to the
author’s decision of including a picture of himself in the
choir, the Santa María Cathedral will reach millions of
readers worldwide. Moreover, in his book promotion tour, Mr Follett
shows snapshots of his visits to Vitoria-Gasteiz. Also, in the
book’s acknowledgements, the author tells how he was inspired
by the Cathedral and thanks the Foundation for all their help.
Besides presenting the book and meeting his readers, Mr Follett is to
unveil a life-size statue of himself created by Basque
sculptor Casto Solano. The statue will stand in Plaza de la
Burullería, the square beside the Cathedral. This sculpture
–a symbol of the town’s gratitude to the writer for
what he has done to make their greatest monument known to the world
– will thus be an attraction in itself plus an embodiment of
Mr Follet’s affectionate relationship with Santa
María.
