Vitoria-Gasteiz,
January 21, 2009 – Tomorrow, Sisters Valle and Carmen
Vaquero will take part in the Encounters with the Cathedral conference
series organised by Fundación Catedral Santa María. Their lecture will
take place at 8:00 p.m. at Palacio de Villa Suso and will focus on the
figure of Toledo`s Garcilaso de la Vega, the writer, and his presence
in Basque lands.
After last week`s session with the expert in Sephardic literature,
Salvador Santa Puche, the Encounters with the Cathedral series, which
has allowed Vitoria-Gasteiz to enjoy world-ranked writers for several
years, will be offering a conference by Carmen and Valle Vaquero
Serrano.
Entitled Garcilaso: his presence in Basque lands, the Vaquero sisters
will recover the figure of this writer and intellectual from Toledo,
one of the finest representatives of Spain`s Siglo de Oro or Golden
Age, an authentic frame of reference for Spanish poets despite his
short life. They will specifically be reviewing his presence in our
lands.
Carmen Vaquero is a professor of Spanish language and literature, and
an expert in Spanish Literature from the Siglo de Oro, especially
Garcilaso de la Vega and sixteenth-century Humanist writers in Latin.
Her extensive curriculum includes her participation as a jury member or
judge in competitions on scores of occasions. She has also published
many books and articles including La perfecta edad garcisaliana y el
CORDE. Dos sonetos para dos Sás: Garcilaso y Góngora [The perfect age
of Garcilaso and the CORDE. Two sonnets for two ladies: Garcilaso and
Góngora.], El libro de los maestrescuelas [The schoolmasters` book] and
Fernán Álvarez, secretario de los Reyes Católicos. Genealogía de la
toledana familia Zapata [Fernán Alvarez, secretary to the Catholic
Monarch. Genealogy of Toledo`s Zapata family].
On the other hand, her sister Valle graduated
from the Complutense University in Madrid and is a physician and
surgeon who specialises in dental medicine. She practiced dental
medicine for two years at the University of Southern Illinois in the
United States and currently practices in Toledo. Nevertheless, her
interest in literature has led her to publish on a number of legends
about Toledo, and she is the author of the historical novel El dulce
fruto de la primavera. Garcilaso y Guiomar [Spring`s sweet fruit.
Garcilaso and Guiomar]. She has also lectured on the historical novel
and taken part in a range of meetings with novelists in this area.
The conference will begin at 8.00 p.m. at Palacio de Villa Suso.
Admission will be free until the maximum seating capacity has been
reach, although members of Santa María Cathedral`s Founders Circle will
have priority until 7:45 p.m..
