Irisarri’s intervention will place tomorrow, Thursday, at 8:00 p.m. free of charge at Palacio de Villa Suso
Vitoria-Gasteiz, February 11 2009.- Encounters with the
Cathedral, the conference series Fundación Catedral Santa María is
dedicating to historical novels this winter, will be hosting Ángeles de
Irisarri tomorrow. As of 8:00 p.m. Palacio de Villa Suso will be a
medieval setting for the adventures of ‘Queen Toda of Navarre’, the
figure around whom her intervention revolves. The lecture will begin at
8:00 p.m. and is free of charge.
After recollecting on the presence of the Sephardic Jews in Spain
thanks to the expert Salvador Santa Puche and approaching the figure of
Garcilaso de la Vega with sisters Carmen and Valle Vaquero, this week,
the Encounters with the Cathedral series will take place at the hand of
Aragonese writer Ángeles de Irisarri.
Entitled Queen Toda Aznar of Navarre, Ángeles de Irisarri’s lecture
will review the long life of this woman who lived from the late ninth
to the mid-tenth century, and was queen of Pamplona thanks to her
marriage to Sancho Garcés I of Pamplona.
Born in Zaragoza and a graduate of Philosophy and Arts , Ángeles de
Irisarri taught secondary school in addition to being an archivist.
Although she has been devoting herself exclusively to literature for
years, she has also worked in an advertising agency.
She is the author of more than twenty-five books, including Toda, reina
de Navarra (1991), El estrellero de San Juan de la Peña (1992),
Ermessenda, condesa de Barcelona (1994), Las damas del fin del mundo
(1999), La reina Urraca (2000), Trilogía de Isabel, la reina (2001),
Romance de ciego (2005) and La artillera (2008).
Irisarri’s prolific literary activity garnered her awards such as the
Isabel de Portugal award for short narratives on two occasions, in 1992
and 1994, Lumen publishing house’s Femenino Singular novel prize
(1994), the Balthasar Gracián award for narrative (1996) and the
Alfonso X el Sabio award for historical novels in 2005. She also
collaborates with a range of media, including columns in newspapers
such as the Heraldo de Aragón and ABC, and in magazines.
The conference
will begin at 8:00 at Palacio de Villa Suso. Admission will be free
until seating capacity has been reached, although members of Santa
María Cathedral’s Founders Circle will have priority admission until
7:45 p.m..
