Vitoria-Gasteiz,
October 8, 2009 –Santa María Cathedral’s history,
rehabilitation process and even its setting in the heart of the city’s
Historic District will be the protagonists of a writing competition
aimed to incentivise citizen participation. Those interested in taking
part have until November 27 to present their works and the winning
stories will be published in what is to be the first volume of a short
story treasury linked to the church.
Fundación Cathedral Santa María is proposing an exercise of
imagination. It is sponsoring a short story contest under the motto
‘Once upon a time there was a Cathedral’ that aims to ascertain how
citizens perceive the project and to promote and stimulate local
literary production.
This
competition, which is slated to be held on an annual basis, will be
divided into four categories: works in Spanish or Basque by young
people between the ages of 12 and 17 and works in those languages by
those who are 18 years of age and older. The core of the plot must
revolve around the church in Vitoria, its history, setting and
rehabilitation and the tales cannot be more than 10 pages long. Only
original, unpublished works that have not won awards in other
competitions may be entered. Each author may submit a maximum of two
works.
Those interested in taking part must present their literary creations
by November 27 at the Fundación headquarters (Plaza de las Brullerías
s/n) Mondays to Fridays between 10.30 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. or between
4.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m.. The jury, composed of five members with links
to the world of culture and literature, will choose up to three stories
in each category from among the participants.
The prize will
consist in the publication of a book that over the years will compile
the awarded works in a short story treasury linked to Santa María
Cathedral. Furthermore all participating stories will be posted on the
Fundación’s website. The jury’s decision will be announced on December
4.
