Vitoria-Gasteiz, 27th November 2009.- With Christmas getting closer, the Santa María Cathedral Foundation has organised, oonce again this year, the traditional educational holiday camps for children on 28th , 29th and 30th December. However, this year there will also be a workshop called 'Preparing Christmas' where children will make christmas cards. This will take place on Saturday 12th December.
With the aim of encouraging children to have a closer look at the history, art and architecture of the Santa María Cathedral while they play and enjoy themselves, the holidays camps and educational workshops have been organised once again. In them participants carry out a manual activity during a workshop to reinforce the educational visit to the cathedral This time the new feature will be a workshop before Christmas on Saturday 12th December from 10.30 to 13.00. Under the name 'Preparing Christmas' boys and girls aged from 8 to 11 taking part will make christmas postcards with coloured cardboard using felt and other types of fabric. First they will carry out a detailed visit to the portico of the Cathedral where, among other things, the iconography of the tympanum where the infancy of Jesus Christ is represented will be explained to them. It will be bilingual, Basque-Spanish, and will cost 3€, 1€ for members or children of members of the Circle of Founders of the Cathedral.
Likewise, coinciding with the school holiday period, there will be a holiday camp again on 28th , 29th and 30th December. Like the workshop it will be bilingual and will be aimed at children aged 8 to 11. The objective is to bring the temple and its surroundings closer to children through short visits where not only the old construction systems that have survived until today in the Cathedral, but also those of the Historic Quarter, and the iconography of the sculpted images in the portico will be explained and analysed.
The first day will be entitled 'Have you heard? Santa María is born!', and here they will see how the cathedral was built, the resources available and the guilds that took part. The second day is dedicated to the city's Old Quarter. Entitled 'Let me introduce you to... The Old Quarter!' they will get to know the streets that surround the temple in this part of the city, their evolution, the importance of the guilds for their formation and the different types of buildings there. And on the third day with 'Guess who I am!' the iconography of the portico will be dealt with, and they will learn about how those 'Stone bibles' were used as educational resources.
In addition, by means of the manual activities participants will develop their creativity and imagination, taking their work home with them as souvenirs of their stay. In this case, the price will be 18 euro, 12 euro for members or children of members of the Circle. There are a limited amount of vacancies in both activities, meaning that prior booking is required at the Visitor Reception Area (Plaza de las Burullerías) or by calling 945 255 135.
