2011/05/19 In collaboration with Salt Valley Foundation and Goiena Mountain Club, we will walk along the tracks walked by the pilgrims and the travelers during the XIIth and XIIIth century.
Vitoria- Gasteiz, 19th May 2011.- Santa Maria Cathedral Foundation has organised in collaboration with Salt Valley of Añana three excursions that will cover the tracks that the pilgrims and travelers made in the XIIth and XIIIth century, when the salt was the most important product. The´Stone and salt cathedrals´ program organises three excursions on the 4th, 11th and 25th June.
The travelers and pilgrims that walked along the province of Alava in the XIIth and XIIIth century found two products which commerce went further than the local limits, the iron and the salt. During Middle Ages the tracks to the Salt Valley of Añana were the most busied ones of the province.
When the town of Salinas de Añana is founded in 1140, due to the production and commerce of the salt it became one of the most prosper towns of the north peninsula. But soon, Alfonso VIII made the church- fortress project of Santa Maria Cathedral and Vitoria became also a important town due to it´s situation in St. James Way.
Santa Maria Cathedral and the Salt Valley of Añana are two essential elements in the heritage in Alava, and we have organised these excursions on the 4th, 11th and 25th June, with 15 kilometers approximately each one.
The stage on 4th June will start in Vitoria and finish in Iruña Veleia ( 16,5 km); the second one will be from Villodas to Pobes ( 14,5km) and the last one from Pobes to Salinas de Añana ( 14,14km).
In these excursions can take part persons older than 9 years old who are used to walk. There is a maximum of 55 people. An accident insurance is included, and the group will be accompanied by staff of Goiena Mountain Club and the Red Cross, that collaborate with Santa Maria Cathedral and Salt Valley Foundation. During the route they will give us some explanations about the interesting places that we will see.
The departure is at 8am and we will return at 3pm approximately. The price is 7€, and 3€ for the members of the Founders Circle.
