In parallel to this repair of the foundations and restoration of the floor of the Cathedral, work was carried out on the lower crypt of the Chapel of Santo Cristo as a funeral pantheon for the bishops of the Diocese of Vitoria, creating an entrance via a stairway to the access gallery, which already existed but was unknown until the time of the archaeological excavation carried out between 2002-2004, and to the semi-subterranean space itself under the chapel, previously used as a funeral area, perhaps by the founders of the Chapel. A bronze funeral chamber has been installed in this space capable of holding up to nine sarcophagi with the remains of deceased bishops of Vitoria (6) and of those to come.
